Born in 1969 in Ashkelon, Israel, Leead Shamir has been painting her entire life — drawn to the tension between beauty and rawness, exposure and concealment, density and space.

Her process begins with abstract gestures-- spots and marks from which figures, animals, and mythic forms slowly emerge. Influenced by Modernism, African Art, and the uninhibited creativity of children, her bold canvases celebrate the richness of human culture through symbols, folklore, and the meeting of the desert and the sea.
